• Everyone knows the legend of the Dogtown boys (and one girl), the motley crew of teenage rebels who supposedly started it all. Or at least that’s the story according to several self-reverential films that positioned the seedy area around Venice Pier as the center of the universe and those semi-wild kids as its gods. But there’s a different narrative, one that has not been told until John O’Malley’s Urethane Revolution. In O’Malley’s telling, the first – and most important – shots of the skateboard revolution were fired 100 miles south of the Venice Pier, in Encinitas, California. That’s where the elements of surf culture, technological innovation, entrepreneurial energy, and raw talent slammed together and sparked what would become a subculture and industry that swept the world.
  
  In raw, energetic prose, O’Malley traces the origins of skateboard culture from a hair-raising trip in a beer truck, to industrial-scale clam dredging in Alaska, to run-ins with drug cartels in Columbia, and finally to the idyllic surf sanctuary of coastal North San Diego County. That’s where O’Malley and his partner decide to invent something called a skatepark. The book follows them as they stumble through the design process, wheedle the city of Carlsbad into approving the project, consult with a hippy fortune teller, and chase financing up and down the coast, which included a brush with death in a plane crash.
  
  Not far from O’Malley’s skatepark was a place that came to be known as Black Hill, a wide, steep, newly-paved stretch of blacktop that was to skatebaorders what Jaws or Wiamea is to surfers. The book follows skateboarders like Bruce Logan, Ty Page, Greg Weaver, Bobby Piercy, and Henry Hester as they slalom or nose-wheelie (inexplicably called a “manual” today) their way down Black Hill. Other skaters appear in the book too, as well as characters like photographer Warren Bolster, editor of Skateboarder Magazine; trust fund boy/madman Bunker Spreckels; reluctant demigod Tony Alva; race impresario Di Dootson Rose; and the fastest man alive, Denis Schufeldt.
  
  Unlike most skateboarding books, this one is more than a mash of photos and captions. It’s a good story told well. And it’s an important addition to skateboarding history, setting the record straight on points that have been misrepresented until now. And unlike most other skateboarding books, this one will be interesting to anyone just looking to read a good story, too.
• This was an easy read with lots of personal stories centering around one of the most pivotal times in skate history. The author really makes that period come to life and had me laughing at so many crazy adventures. I highly recommend this delightful piece of skate history!

• I wish Sabeeha Rehman was my friend. She seems like such a wonderful, inspiring woman, who never takes no for an answer and never fails to challenge the status quo, either in the society or in her own understanding of the world. This will to change, to evolve, and cause ripples around her, are essential parts of a feminist icon, and I'm very happy to have learned of one who lives in New York and is like me a foreigner from a different culture. It was also priceless to put a face to a powerhouse of revisionist Islam. And I think what I admire most in the way Sabeeha sees the world is the way that she can always spot the gray areas, both in her own conduct, in her religion, or the world overall, and she calls them out for what they are. And when she doesn't, well, I'm pretty sure she will one day )
  My only problem with the book was that Sabeeha doesn't ever acknowledge the class component of the Islamic society at large and in Pakistan in particular, which in my opinion is a huge deal. Sabeeha and most people in the narrative are people who come from privilege. While it still renders them foreigners and migrants in the American context, they are nonetheless more open to change, evolution and assimilation than those who have less means to pursue education or repatriation. But I was peeved when Sabeeha completely glossed over the existence of domestic help or poverty in her homeland. What is Islam in Pakistan through the eyes of the family's servants? How does Sabeeha's view of them change as she continues living in the US? And what happens when her parents die, do the servants go back to the slums, or do they have families? How does Islam play into this sort of existence? I mean, yes, ok, I understand that Sabeeha's memoir can not account for all sorts of experiences in Pakistan and/or Islam, and it's a memoir, not a critical theory piece. But the way she circles these things, creates holes in her narrative, and the picture of middle class Islam that Sabeeha herself represents, while idyllic and evolved, starts to seem purposefully crafted.
  By no means am I implying that radicalization only happens within lower classes. No, it seems that the major players in terrorist organizations are usually people from privileged backgrounds, just like Sabeeha, but less kind and well meaning, empathic. But the cannon fodder is often the underprivileged, and we can't have an inclusive talk about the future of Islam in the world without talking about them.
  That said, I also understand that this book is more about being a muslim woman in the pre- and post-9/11 East Coast, and Sabeeha is the finest example of courage and compassion in those unfortunate circumstances.
• Humorous, funny but sweet and true Sabeeha tells her story as she traces her journey from a young bride to a mother, to an immigrant trying to make America home, to a community leader, a professional an activist, an interfaith leader and much more.
  The book will resonate and enthral if you are

  Take this incredible journey with her. Once started, you will not put it down till the journey is over and all the threads have been woven in her prayers rug.
• Sabeeha Rehman’s book “Threading My Prayer Rug “ I received my copy and I was curious to know about her journey. As an immigrant we all have an experience of coming to America from somewhere on the globe with our culture and local traditions and then we all are somehow shaped up to become American. That’s the beauty of American culture that it absorbs you and molds you in such a way that you keep your cultural diversity with all American values of liberty justice and equality. It is struggle and it is test of your ability to deal and succeed in your professional life and cultural diversity. I am amazed how Ms Rehman was able to narrate her journey with such an eloquence that the stories have not lost a bit of its flavor. . We immigrants from similar back ground can really relate to it. Beauty of the book is that she was able to narrate her story in such a beautiful way to make it easy for readers to understand describing events in cleverly simple way with engaging and charming style of writing that a person who has no background of that culture can enjoy the story with benefits learning something new . She really was able to redesign and re-thread her rug in to red white and blue . It’s a delightful read of Journey of integration, assimilation of cultures faith and aspirations along with dreams to arrive at a destination called American and Sabeeha Rehman exactly knew how to connect with readers and keeps them engaged on this incredible journey
• Rehman did a good job revealing her struggle to maintain her sense of self, family, culture, religion while acquiring an American way of life. She tells of support from the Jewish community and Muslims from countries other than Pakistan. Her intellectual seeking to understand Islam as a religion vs. a cultural interpretation is enlightening--she came to that as a parent wanting to guide her sons since her family in Pakistan had been more secular. All in all I gained a greater appreciation of Islam and its practice in America. I admired Rehman's intellectual and multi-cultural growth throughout her adulthood. I also think she had an amazing partner in her arranged marriage husband.
• I bought this book because I loved the title but as I read it, I became disallusioned as I felt the author left her original intent to explain why the choice to build a mosque at the 9/11 site was misrepresented and went off on her personal issues which were not interesting to me.

What are the risks to the African American community today and in the future if wealth creation and generational transfer gaps between blacks and whites continue to expand? Expect an apocalyptic storm of financial and life cycle implications that may be impossible to reverse. For many black Americans, the hopes and dreams of capturing the smallest slice of the American Dream will literally descend into the abyss. Many will slip further down the economic scale, cascading toward “bottom feeder” and scavenger career permanence in a society that will increasingly cater to the affluent. Incoming and highly educated immigrants of color from Asia, Middle East and other countries will broadly fill diversity gaps, excel in job acquisition and leave black communities even further behind as these immigrants of color expand wealth creation at an accelerated pace within their own households and communities. African American representation as executives, middle management and individual contributors in corporate America could stall along a pathological trek toward labor force marginality. Driven by intense global competition, but few counter measures by many African American households to properly prepare their children to effectively compete, the labor class slide could accelerate. The threat is a clear and present danger if we remain on the current financial continuum.

As low-level career “bottom feeders” and scavengers, we will have limited control over our financial futures and compelled to pursue whatever it takes to survive in a society that will increasingly reward societal affluence. Our capacity to invest for capital growth, fund retirement and higher education will diminish substantially due to dwindling household financial resources. Sadly, the wealth gap between the upper one percent of affluent Americans and middle-income wage earners will expand, exponentially, placing downward pressure on already struggling middle class families. With little or no consistent wealth creation and progressive transfer, subsequent African American generations will have little hope of breaking this vicious cycle of wealth stagnation and precipitous decline. For many households, the looming specter of the Black Apocalypse will begin to draw nigh, driving an unscalable and impenetrable wall of financial impotence between generations and forcing subsequent generations to become increasingly disadvantaged with little or no wealth continuity.

But can we effectively steer this impeding financial ship wreck toward calmer water? The answer is a resounding, yes! Together, we will explore empowering financial strategies designed to

Rein in spending,

Leverage strong financial stewardship and literacy in our decisions,

Implement viable budget controls,

Invest purposefully for capital growth,

Effectively build wealth and share it with subsequent generations.

This is our time to dramatically shift the current financial course from uncertainty to one that will allow African American families opportunities to secure greater control of finances and begin to diminish this rapidly expanding wealth divide in America. Be advised that efforts to achieve measurable financial success will be unsustainable without deliberate personal commitment to effectively alter spending habits, shore up financial stewardship and literacy, aggressively teach children the strategic value of money and take the high road toward sustainable wealth creation with generational continuity. Most importantly, we must internalize the criticality of meticulously planning and executing a personalized financial roadmap that will help drive not only individual life cycle success, but subsequent generational success. We do have the power and fortitude to achieve! An impending Black Apocalypse need never become an insidious reality, but time is running out.

How anyone could support it in any way is inexplicable.
• I thought I had read all the important main books on the Cold War, but Ben Macintyre comes through and gives us a true life narrative of one of the West's greatest heroes - Oleg Gordievsky. A man who helped, particularly the UK, inform the goings on of the KGB and all the Boris and Natasha's and helped hasten the end of that nasty politik.
  
  This would be best read in the autumn on a train in the UK. Knowing that something good came out of all this, after all. Ben Macintyre probably will be sitting behind you. He has your back covered.
• The Spy and The Traitor is touted in its subhead as "the greatest espionage story ever told." That isn't just publisher hype. The real events and the story of Oleg Gordievsky, KGB officer and diplomat reads like something from a John LeCarre or Robert Ludlum story...except it's true and marvelously documented. Raised by a father and older brother who both served devotedly and unquestioningly in the KGB (dad worked through Stalin's purges and survived in the KGB's precursor agency). Loyalty to the service then would seem to be a given--betraying the agency and its million members (you read that right) would be like sabotaging the family's business. Yet events and history continue to flummox human expectations.
  
  First the invasion of Hungary, then the erection of the Berlin Wall (which Gordievsky was present to see) and finally the brutal crushing of the Prague Spring in Czechoslovakia all drove this KGB officer further and further away from the party. Exposure to the West in Copenhagen and later in London provided a first hand taste of liberty and freedom. It served as the final push into the eager and eternally grateful arms of his M16 handlers. The double agent provided them with not merely a trove of concrete information but invaluable insight into the workings of the KGB and planning of the Soviet Leadership. It is no exaggeration to say Gordievsky was our Kim Philby. The details of these meetings, contacts, "drops", etc. and how spies operated from the end WWII until the dissolution of the Soviet empire is fascinating and novelistic in the telling. Gordievsky's escape or "exfiltration" from the USSR by M16 is nothing short of breathtaking--a Bourne Identity moment.
  
  Best of all though is the historical and moral context that gives readers a perspective of events' meanings. Ben McIntyre is a masterful storyteller and detailed chronicler. He thoroughly but concisely points out the import and value of Grodievsky's insights--particularly warning the Brits and thereby the Americans that the Soviet leader Yuri Andropov genuinely believed the West was intent upon a first nuclear strike. Appreciating that paranoia can be as perilous as animus, first Thatcher and then Reagan worked to assuage Soviet fears. It was Gordievsky who prepped both sides for successful summits in the 80s and it was he who counseled wisely to neither disband nor include the USSR in the SDI or Star Wars initiative. Rather, ratchet up the pressure and they would go bankrupt trying to keep up, which is precisely what happened.
  
  Gordievsky certainly didn't single handedly end the cold war--there were dozens of events and officials who played a significant role. But Oleg Gordievsky was surely in the first rank of those who made a valuable contribution earning the appreciation of Reagan, Thatcher, the CIA, M16 and yes, QEII (the monarch, not the ocean liner). Best of all, McIntryre doesn't put a patriotic gloss on his subject's behavior. What Gordievsky did was of enormous benefit to democracy and the West but it destroyed his marriage, implicated his wife and children as well as family and friends who all paid some price for his defection. In short, his actions both saved and ruined lives and the choices he made can be rightfully regarded as both morally defensible and appalling or enraging to those who knew him. Unsurprisingly, his marriage failed and most Russian friends regard him with disdain and disgust. In the western intelligence community he is a hero.
  
  This is terrific, important history and a wonderfully well-told tale. Enjoy!
• It is not for nothing that John Le Carre noted in a front cover blurb “the best true spy story I have ever read.” Ben Macintyre’s biography of KGB Colonel and MI6 spy Oleg Gordievsky reads like a novel. His description of Gordievsky’s exfiltration from Moscow by MI6 under the watchful eyes of the KGB has all the hallmarks of a tension-packed Hollywood spy drama and that alone is worth the price of the book.
  
  The story begins with Gordievsky growing up as the son of a KGB general who becomes disillusioned with life under Soviet communism. He follows in his father’s footsteps and is recruited by the KGB. He is initially stationed in Denmark and there he is willingly recruited by MI6. As he rises in the KGB bureaucracy he become ever more important to the British. Along the way he marries, divorces remarries and has two daughters.
  
  Where Gordievsky enters history is when he becomes a senior political officer in the KGB’s London rezindentura in the early 1980s. While there he reports to his MI6 handlers that the Soviets actually believed that the United States was going to launch a first strike on the Soviet Union. So paranoid is KGB head and future general secretary Yuri Andropov that he sets up Operation RYaN to find evidence of plans for a first strike. As in most bureaucracies the KGB spies produce such evidence thereby exacerbating his paranoia. The same thing happened with the CIA when it was ordered to look for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq twenty years later.
  
  Compounding the problem was that at about the same time in 1983 NATO ordered up its massive Able Archer exercise which was a practice drill to deter a Soviet invasion of Western Europe. To the Russians it looked like a precursor to war. It was Gordievsky who tells the British of the Russian fears who then relay that information to the CIA. Several authors have noted that had not both sides deescalated, nuclear war was on the table. Gordievsky’s information to both
  Thatcher and Reagan was influential in bringing about from the de-escalation.
  
  As the Soviet heir apparent, Gorbachev met with Margaret Thatcher in London in 1984. Here Gordievsky’s role is crucial because be briefed both Thatcher and Gorbachev as MI6 spy and KGB political officer on negotiating strategy. The meeting was a big success and Thatcher noted that Gorbachev was a man she could do business with. The end of the Cold War was now more than a pipe dream. Later, after his exfiltration, Gordievsky meets with Reagan to advise him on negotiating strategy for an upcoming meeting with Gorbachev.
  
  But wait, what caused Gordievsky to be exfiltrated from Moscow, especially after he was made the Rezident of the KGB’s London office? In very short form the CIA is jealous of MI6 and wants to know who their source is. They soon find out and his name ends up on the desk of Aldrich Ames who was selling secrets to KGB officers in Washington. His betrayal leads to the death of scores of CIA operatives and sources in Russia and ultimately to the KGB investigation of Gordievsky. In Macintyre’s view Ames is a traitor who sold out his country for big bucks and Gordievsky is an honorable spy seeking to better his country.
  
  This is a great book that I couldn’t put down and I highly recommend it. As an added plus you learn quite a bit of tradecraft.
• It is rare that any book keeps my interest through the entire story, but this is one of them. Because the story is true, it is better than even the best spy novel with made up characters and plot contrivances. Here everything was real and in many instances Oleg's life depended on decisions made by his handlers. The real-life spy dramas are one of my favorite genres. By the end of the book, I really felt sorry for Oleg's wife and daughters, who through no fault of their own, ended up in a nightmare when Oleg left them behind in Russia only to be retrieved 6 years later with disastrous results.
  
  I'll be reading A Spy Among Friends next, which I hear is even better.

Because the category of 'late style' is extremely common in literary studies, it is often used uncritically.
