This book is a must-read for every educator. It is completely transformative; and most importantly it's a call to action. Not in the gimmicky way that so many initiatives get pushed forward in districts, but in a real, down to earth way that begs and pleads educators to be human. Take a good hard look at yourself, your practices, your beliefs, your understandings, your own implicit bias. Look at your students as the beautiful, strong humans they are and the beautiful, strong, empowered humans they could be when given the tools to reach their potential. It's not about any kind of fix, or initiative, or data survey or test score. It's about humans helping humans.The only way to do that is to ask those same questions of your students. Not in a hypothetical sense where you make up the answers based on the visible, but really talk to your students. Dive deep into who they are and who they want to become. Then consider the power you have to raise them up!

Dr. Love ha written a piece that EVERY EDUCATOR MUST read! Dr. Love shifts the paradigm of educational pedagogy by arguing that education is not enpugh nor the answer to creating transformational change. We need to create a world where black and brown youth are truly seen, celebrated, and provided with the utmost love and respect to thrive. This piece is amazing and a must read! As a high school educational leader and a higher ed professor, I will be using this text to engage existing and pre-professional educators in necessary reflection and the re-envisioning of education for liberation.

Bettina Love addresses what is needed for people of color in the United States to thrive rather than merely survive. She passionately argues for the need to create new systems and structures for educational, political, economic, and community freedom. While Love as an educator focuses the book primarily on the educational system, she also addresses the challenges that must be confronted in the wider American culture. She recognizes the intersectionality of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationalism, and dis/ability. Love advocates for abolitionist teaching, which is working in solidarity with communities of color to eradicate injustice in and outside of schools. Love defines what abolitionist teaching is and what it must accomplish, but this is not a how-to book providing a specific process for implementation. The strength of the book is to get readers to recognize that those on the margins of society are excluded because of systemic barriers. Educational reforms will be ineffective unless they address the root causes of injustice. Educators are not the only ones who should read this book. Every American concerned about the future of our nation can learn much from reading this volume.
An indictment of the American education establishment, especially as it relates to the classrooms inhabited by "dark" bodies the author favors the "dark" term as one that includes a wide variety of people who suffer from a history of injustice and oppression. She casts a critical eye on a number of gimmicks that are popular these days the KIPP school movement, or the idea of teaching "grit" (this was a new one on me, but that particular gimmick certainly sets off my BS detector!). Education nowadays is largely based on perpetuating a culture based on White rage. Instead of gimmickry, she advocates the radical mindset which was typical of the abolitionists of the 19th century hence the subtitle "Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom." As she says, rather than simply being allies, right-thinking people need to be co-conspirators, willing to put their bodies on the line to overturn the system. A book that won't provide much comfort to any people on any side, but which may get them thinking.

"It can be a risk to re-read books that you loved as a child or a teen. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is one of the books that I read countless times as I was growing up. The world of Narnia never got old or boring. Happily, I enjoyed this as much 40+ years later!
Published in 1950, this was the then first book of the Narnia series. A prequel was published later. I read other books in the Narnia series, but this was always my favorite. People will tell you that this is a story about Christianity, a retelling of stories from the Bible, or an allegory. As a child I thought this was a wonderful fairy tale. As an adult, I was able to see the moral or Christian parallels but I chose to ignore them and read this as a fairy tale.
Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy live in London but they are sent to the countryside during WWII to escape the blitz. They are housed with an elderly and wise professor and his strict and intimidating housekeeper in an old mansion. While playing hide and seek on a rainy day, Lucy hides in wardrobe. Behind the fur coats is the land of Narnia. Narnia is ruled by the White Witch and she has made the land "always winter but never Christmas." Narnia is divided into good animals and bad animals who serve the Witch. Lucy is helped by a "good" faun, who protects her from the Witch. The presence of a human in Narnia is threatening to the Witch and all the animals have been told to alert her immediately. Lucy safely returns home and her siblings do not believe her story. Edmund and Lucy then find Narnia together but he meets the White Witch and is put under her spell. On returning home, he lies to the two older siblings and claims Narnia does not exist. Eventually, all four siblings end up in Narnia, though with Edmund sneaking off to see the Witch. With the help of Mr. & Mrs. Beaver, Peter, Susan, and Lucy go to meet Aslan the Lion and together they battle to save Narnia. Each child is given a special task and a magical tool. Aslan makes huge sacrifices to save Edmund. The good and bad animals of the forest do battle and being a fairy tale, there is a happy ending.
This book really sparked my imagination when I was a child. I just love the idea of a secret wardrobe that leads to another world. I still do! The book is dedicated to Mr. Lewis' goddaughter Lucy. It reads as if your kindly godfather was telling you a wonderful story. I love the little asides by the narrator. As a child, I did not realize that the story took place during WWII or that many children were removed from London for their safety. Otherwise, the story is as I remembered and I believe the illustrations are the same. This is a classic for a reason. If you missed it in childhood, read it yourself or share it with a special young person. It was lovely to visit Narnia again!"

This is an 8.5x11 (magazine size) paperback copy of an abridged version of the C.S. Lewis classic – NOT the original. “Independently Publishedâ€. The cover art appears to have been printed from a low resolution digital image, and the giant page margins are a waste of space. I was hoping this would be a good primer for my 7YO, but was sadly disappointed.

Perhaps I missed out on an integral part of childhood, but I did not have many fairy tales or books of magical tales in my life as a young boy. Lewis has an uncanny ability to make this readable as an adult and readable to a child. The reflections towards real life (one does not lock himself in a wardrobe!) and the magical life of Narnia (...because that is how beavers behave) are incredibly easy to relate to one another - it's as if you are there, understanding the ways of Narnia, though you've never been (and sadly, never will be).
Notable are the Christian reflections of this tale, of what it's like to go down a path of sin with Edmund as he makes his way through the cold to the witch's castle, having fellowship amongst themselves at the dinner table, and Aslan's ultimate sacrifice, while being a being of immense power, allowed himself to be muzzled, beaten, and killed by the hands of the witch. A Christian myself, I look forward to re-reading the tale to grasp upon Lewis's deeper yet simple stories of the life of children and beings if Narnia. That being said, if you are not Christian, the story does not really reference Christianity much at all, save calling the male children "Sons of Adam" and the female children "Daughters of Eve".
I love this book; read it to the kids (5 & 9 yrs) as soon as it arrived, and they both loved it too. Yes, it's an adaptation and shortened and not written the way C.S. Lewis wrote the book (and there are some interesting things Lucy says that she never said in the original book or film version), but the pictures are beautiful and it captures more or less the gist of the story -- four children tumble through a magic wardrobe into Narnia to help Aslan fight the White Witch. When my kids are older, I'll read them the original, much longer C.S. Lewis story which is of course far superior, but for a picture book, this is wonderful for young children to learn the story.
Cheapo edition. Pauline Baynes' wonderful illustrations are very poorly rendered. The original book had many color plates - none of them is included here. And the lithography is terrible many words are so light on the page they can barely be read. Go to alibris and get a copy of the 1950 hardcover edition.

I was hoping this would be a good primer for my 7YO, but was sadly disappointed.
It can be a risk to re-read books that you loved as a child or a teen. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is one of the books that I read countless times as I was growing up. The world of Narnia never got old or boring. Happily, I enjoyed this as much 40+ years later!
Published in 1950, this was the then first book of the Narnia series. A prequel was published later. I read other books in the Narnia series, but this was always my favorite. People will tell you that this is a story about Christianity, a retelling of stories from the Bible, or an allegory. As a child I thought this was a wonderful fairy tale. As an adult, I was able to see the moral or Christian parallels but I chose to ignore them and read this as a fairy tale.
Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy live in London but they are sent to the countryside during WWII to escape the blitz. They are housed with an elderly and wise professor and his strict and intimidating housekeeper in an old mansion. While playing hide and seek on a rainy day, Lucy hides in wardrobe. Behind the fur coats is the land of Narnia. Narnia is ruled by the White Witch and she has made the land "always winter but never Christmas." Narnia is divided into good animals and bad animals who serve the Witch. Lucy is helped by a "good" faun, who protects her from the Witch. The presence of a human in Narnia is threatening to the Witch and all the animals have been told to alert her immediately. Lucy safely returns home and her siblings do not believe her story. Edmund and Lucy then find Narnia together but he meets the White Witch and is put under her spell. On returning home, he lies to the two older siblings and claims Narnia does not exist. Eventually, all four siblings end up in Narnia, though with Edmund sneaking off to see the Witch. With the help of Mr. & Mrs. Beaver, Peter, Susan, and Lucy go to meet Aslan the Lion and together they battle to save Narnia. Each child is given a special task and a magical tool. Aslan makes huge sacrifices to save Edmund. The good and bad animals of the forest do battle and being a fairy tale, there is a happy ending.
This book really sparked my imagination when I was a child. I just love the idea of a secret wardrobe that leads to another world. I still do! The book is dedicated to Mr. Lewis' goddaughter Lucy. It reads as if your kindly godfather was telling you a wonderful story. I love the little asides by the narrator. As a child, I did not realize that the story took place during WWII or that many children were removed from London for their safety. Otherwise, the story is as I remembered and I believe the illustrations are the same. This is a classic for a reason. If you missed it in childhood, read it yourself or share it with a special young person. It was lovely to visit Narnia again!
Perhaps I missed out on an integral part of childhood, but I did not have many fairy tales or books of magical tales in my life as a young boy. Lewis has an uncanny ability to make this readable as an adult and readable to a child. The reflections towards real life (one does not lock himself in a wardrobe!) and the magical life of Narnia (...because that is how beavers behave) are incredibly easy to relate to one another - it's as if you are there, understanding the ways of Narnia, though you've never been (and sadly, never will be).
Notable are the Christian reflections of this tale, of what it's like to go down a path of sin with Edmund as he makes his way through the cold to the witch's castle, having fellowship amongst themselves at the dinner table, and Aslan's ultimate sacrifice, while being a being of immense power, allowed himself to be muzzled, beaten, and killed by the hands of the witch. A Christian myself, I look forward to re-reading the tale to grasp upon Lewis's deeper yet simple stories of the life of children and beings if Narnia. That being said, if you are not Christian, the story does not really reference Christianity much at all, save calling the male children "Sons of Adam" and the female children "Daughters of Eve".
I love this book; read it to the kids (5 & 9 yrs) as soon as it arrived, and they both loved it too. Yes, it's an adaptation and shortened and not written the way C.S. Lewis wrote the book (and there are some interesting things Lucy says that she never said in the original book or film version), but the pictures are beautiful and it captures more or less the gist of the story -- four children tumble through a magic wardrobe into Narnia to help Aslan fight the White Witch. When my kids are older, I'll read them the original, much longer C.S. Lewis story which is of course far superior, but for a picture book, this is wonderful for young children to learn the story.
Cheapo edition. Pauline Baynes' wonderful illustrations are very poorly rendered. The original book had many color plates - none of them is included here. And the lithography is terrible many words are so light on the page they can barely be read. Go to alibris and get a copy of the 1950 hardcover edition.

Well, I thought when I read the original Fifty Shades Trilogy, that nothing EL James came up with could top it. Then I read Grey, the first book from Christian’s POV and loved it. I’d always understood why Christian Grey was the way he is. Having had a less than ideal childhood myself, I could relate so much to how he felt and reacted. I loved Grey, but Darker surpassed it. OMG, being in his head. It was painful seeing him as an angry man, who still had that frightened little boy within him, who couldn’t get close to anyone, who was so scared of being touched, he wouldn’t sleep with anyone, for fear they might touch him in their sleep, and his need to tie up women so they couldn’t put their hands on him during sex. Watching him fall in love. Feeling so vulnerable and insecure because he’d never felt before, the way he feels for Ana. His fear of losing her. His self hatred and sadly not being able to see the good man he really was. I loved seeing him blossom under the gentle touch and love of Ana. I loved everything about this book. It was such an emotional read. I couldn’t get enough and hated it when I came to the end of this book. I can’t wait for the author to write Freed from his POV. Well, I hope she writes it. I can honestly say, that after having read the original trilogy 17 times, that the books from Christian’s POV are my favourites. I think for anyone who misjudged Christian and accused him of being a cold, arrogant man who was abusive towards women, they should really read the books from his POV. He is not cold or arrogant, or abusive. He is a man who had a horrific start to life, who learnt over the years to cope the only way he knew how. He unfortunately was introduced to sex by the wrong kind of person, but it taught him a way he could be in control, something so important to him. Something I understood because when you have no control as a child, you crave it as an adult. Ana certainly turns Christian on his head. Everything that is familiar to him and helps him cope is gone, and yet, he takes to his new lifestyle so well. This is an incredible love story. It’s the love story between a damaged young man and the woman who comes into his life and loves him, flaws and all. Who slowly but surely shows him there is another way and who teaches him to love, and to start to at least like himself. I LOVED everything about Darker.
50 Shades fans will be consumed in Christian Grey’s DARKER point of view. This book clearly gives the reader a much deeper understanding to Christian’s strong feelings for Ana of which he has difficulty admitting to himself. The effects of his first four years of life with a drug addict birth mother and her prostitution life that dragged him with her, always referring him by the name of Maggot, comes to the surface as his love for Ana grows more intense. Dr. Flynn has made a critical difference in helping Christian not only admit his feelings of love for Ana, but making him see he is “not afraid of commitment.†The depth of story in Charlie Tango’s crash, really brings to life the seriousness of Christian extreme need for a loving, intelligent, independent, compassionate but very strong, Ana. For fans of this saga, Darker is a must read.
I read and listened to Darker.. whispersync yay!!! it was a good book, i love that we got to see many of the scenes that we like on Christian's mind, his thoughts and also the conversations he had .. like the dialogs between Christian and Elena or Christian and Leila .. also how annoyed he was with Elena, we get to read his struggle while Ana is touching him, or when he thinks she is going to leave him again, his memories when he was just a child.. his memories of the bad men in his mothers life.. so many key scenes are written here in his POV and i love how we understand him more.
I love how dirty and sexual he is when he is having sex with Ana or when he is around her.. he always has sex on his mind and is thinking how much he wants her.. we can also see how much he needs her.. he is a true gentleman, always protecting her and making sure she is always safe..
at some point i got annoyed that his internal dialog, was way TOO much i mean i know is a POV but sometimes it was too much.. it was a long book 18 freaking hours lol yea...but it was good..
can't wait for the last book !!!
I'm a huge Fifty's fan, read the other books Numerous times!! The love story of this trilogy is so incredible, how the unconditional love of one person can totally change such a damaged person. I fell in love with their love story. I am a little disappointed in this book though. I expected it to dig deeper into Christian's past, his childhood, time with Elena & had really hoped for more sessions with Dr Flynn. The Fifty Shades Christians POV showed us a little why he is the way he is but I expected this one to go into more depth. The advertising talked about seeing how depraved he was but it didn't show more than his first POV book. Even the convo with his mom finding out about Elena was not as impacting as I had expected nor was him admitting to Flynn that he was in love with Anna.

I had read the first trilogy of the 50 shades books told from Anna's POV and while they weren't the greatest things ever written they were fairly entertaining for quick reads. This book however, terrible. Christians POV is very scary and would give any woman cause to run far, far away from him no matter how much money he had. If you want to read a book from the view of a domineering, controlling, mentally abusing, stalker then this book is for you. If not, turn back now and don't say I didn't warn you. I didn't even finish it and that's something that rarely happens to me with books, but about half way through I could not take him and his thoughts any more.

Any reader interested in the direct political interaction between the top three Allied leaders in World War II, especially as related to European affairs, will profit from this book.
The co-authors (one British, the other Russian) provide useful background commentary on the many messages that rifled between Moscow, London, and Washington, D.C. (I do think an American historian may have taken slightly different views at times than these two historians, but nonetheless, many thought provoking subjects are brought forward.)
Some specific thoughts of mine 1) I did not like the occasional use of the term "Wheelchair President" when referring to FDR; 2) The subject matters gathering most of the attention of the three leaders seemed to be the Second Front, the Northern Convoy, and Poland--both the Katyn Affair and its post-war governance; 3) A British ambassador to Moscow is referred to often, usually quite positively Archibald Clark Kerr. Those wanting a good book about this odd diplomat might read "Radical Diplomat" by Donald Gillies (1999); 4) I do not agree with a number of the assessments scattered throughout this effort. For example, I do not agree that "In retrospect, the Battle of the Bulge seems like a temporary blip on the Western Front ..." nor do I agree that "Taken in the round, Yalta therefore seemed like a satisfactory piece of complex diplomatic bargaining."; and, 5) I certainly do not accept the rather positive picture painted of Stalin, a man who was responsible for killing millions of his own citizens over the decades, not to mention the cold-blooded murder of the Polish officer corps at Katyn.
All-in-all, however, this is a good book for presenting the actual messages between the three leaders who presided over the hard won victory in World War II.
